Contemporary British Art

maggi hambling born 1945

Her north sea paintings began in 2002 during the pause between making the maquette for 'Scallop' on Aldeburgh beach and her realisation.

Since then this cold and inhospitable sea has been her source of inspiration. Every morning, and in all weathers, Hambling is compelled to go down on the beach to look at the sea and sketch before returning to her studio to paint.

Intense and untameable, passionate and tempestuous, words to describe this coastline that can fairly be applied to Hambling herself and most definitely to these paintings.
